Abingdon HIVE

Serving Abingdon, Wantage, Grove and Didcot.

Abingdon is one of Britain’s oldest market towns situated on the heart of the river Thames. Although Abingdon is small with limited facilities, it is central to many other larger towns which offer a fantastic range of shopping and entertainment facilities such as Oxford, London, Reading and Swindon.

There are 5 service family accommodation (SFA) areas for Abingdon with 75% of these in the village of Shippon where Dalton Barracks is based; just a short walking distance away from the station and a mile outside Abingdon town centre. Further SFA can be found at Wantage and Grove, Southmoor and Didcot.

Bicester HIVE

Bicester is situated just north of the city of Oxford and home to HQ Bicester Garrison, 23 Pioneer Regiment, DSDC, DCTA, and DSDA. It is surrounded mainly by small villages. Local amenities are limited but a wider range of shopping and entertainment facilities can easily accessed in Oxford, Banbury, Aylesbury and Milton Keynes. London is also within an hour travelling either by car, train or coach.

15 Army Education Centre located at Bicester has an Army Learning Centre and library. There are many courses on offer. This facility is available for all serving personnel and their dependents to use, as well as civil servants working in the garrison area.

The garrison has a gym which has a large indoor gym which is use for football, badminton, circuit training, and aerobics; the gym also has various aerobic machines and free weights. There is also an indoor heated swimming pool which is open for lane swimming during the day and family swim times after school. Future plans are to open a swim school and aqua-aerobics classes. The community centre hosts mums and tots, youth club, music train and tumble tots.

Bramcote HIVE

Serving Bramcote, Middlemarch Rise, Camp Hill and Nuneaton.

Bramcote is situated between Nuneaton and Rugby. Nuneaton Town Centre is a 5 minute drive. Coventry City centre is a 10 minute drive and the centre of Birmingham can be reached within 30 minutes. Tamworth, Warwick and Leicester are all within easy reach. Bramcote is central to a good motorway links: M6, M69, M1, M42 and M5 are all close by.

There is a host of facilities within station including a well equipped gym, swimming pool, Londis shop, hairdressing and beauty salon, library, thrift shop, pre-school and nursery, Jungle Gym, coffee shop, and youth club. The Army Learning Centre and Training Wing provides facilities for serving personnel and dependents. There is a weekly parent and toddler group; and the HIVE co-ordinates a monthly solicitors and CAB surgery. There are the usual mess facilities including the Swan Club for junior ranks, Himali Club for the Gurkha community and the 501 Club which caters for all ranks.

Grantham HIVE

Serving Prince William of Gloucester Barracks.

Grantham is on the border with Leicestershire, a town with its roots in the old stagecoach route from London.

Prince William of Gloucester Barracks is located on a site occupying the high ground to the east of and overlooking Grantham. On what was originally a flying training school for the Royal Flying Corps, it subsequently became known as RAF Spitalgate. The airfield, when taken over from the RAF in 1977, was renamed Prince William of Gloucester Barracks by HRH Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester. It became headquarters The Royal Logistics Corps Territorial Army in 1993.

Hermitage HIVE

Serving Faircross and Curridge Place.

Hermitage and Curridge are small rural villages 1 mile from the junction of the M4 and M34. The nearest town is Newbury. Excellent road links give easy access to Reading, London, Bristol, Oxford and the south coast.

The Joint Aeronautical and Geospatial Organisation is based at Denison Barracks, Hermitage. The unit houses 42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic) and the Royal School of Military Survey.

The unit boasts some very good sporting facilities including a gym, squash courts, tennis courts and astro turf pitch. There is a library within the unit which provides internet access, as does the HIVE. Many clubs have sessions in and around the unit including wargamers, arts and crafts and brownies.

North Luffenham

Serving St Georges Barracks and Cottesmore.

St George’s Barracks is situated between Edith Weston and North Luffenham in Rutland, which is the smallest county in England. It is situated on the south bank of Rutland Water almost central between the towns of Stamford to the east and Oakham to the west. North Luffenham village is approximately 5 minutes drive away from the camp. It has two public houses, a shop, a Church of England Church and a primary school.

At St George’s Barracks there is a gym and swimming pool, which is available for use not only by the service personnel but their dependents too. There is a new community centre on camp with a large newly refurbished child’s soft play area and internet suite, which also has an efax-bluey and webcam facility. The community development worker and HIVE information officer are located in this building.
