Royal Signals Sailing

Competitive sailing events

The Corps is strongly represented by sailors in various successful sailing teams.

Royal Signals officers and soldiers have sailed in competitive events ranging from the Whitbread Round the World Race to numerous World, European and class Championships.

Others have sailed, almost literally, to the ends of the earth on adventurous expeditions.

Royal Signals Yacht Club (RSYC)

The Royal Corps of Signals has its own Yacht Club, providing opportunities to sail offshore, in dinghies and/or to windsurf. It aims to promote sailing amongst all ranks of the Royal Corps of Signals; providing opportunities, encouragement, funding and support to all members of the Corps who wish to participate for adventurous training, competitive or recreational benefit.

The RSYC cruising yachts are available for charter to members at very preferential rates. Details of the yachts and the online booking system are located under the tabs on the right. Club Membership is open to all serving and retired members of the Corps and their families. Membership opportunities and benefits can also be extended to others who have particular links with Royal Corps of Signals units.

Skywave is the racing yacht and it participates in a range of events, for example in the Round the Island Race, the Army Offshore Regatta (Ex SOLENT VENTURE) and even in the Azores and Back Race (2015). The Offshore section also organises two Sail Training Weeks per year (Spring and Autumn) and other events / expeditions. Details are promulgated via the RSYC Facebook site, which is administered by the Corps Bosun (contact details below).

Dinghies and Dayboats

The RSYC Dinghies and Dayboats (D&D) section runs a 3-4 crew SB20 and 4-5 crew J80 which are raced at fleet racing events both in the UK (principally in the Solent, such as Cowes week and Hamble Championships) and internationally, typically at the world series events for both boats. These are both serious race boats and are challenging to sail for seasoned inshore and offshore sailors alike.

In order to cater for those new to sailing, we organise annual RYA level 2 training in Lazer 2000 Dinghies, leading to training weekends in the larger boats. We also compete in other D&D events such as the Southport 24 hour race, our annual meet at Seaview on the Isle of Wight and the Inter-Corps Dinghy Championships.
