63 Works Group Royal Engineers (63 Wks Gp RE) is a highly specialised technical unit. It provides professional and technical expertise to the Armed Forces and where appropriate to other government departments, in 2 key areas:

Engineer works
Structures, facilities and associated services in the broadest sense, including roads and bridges. Three sub-units of the Group provide this expertise, and are designated as 518 and 535 Specialist Teams Royal Engineers (Works) (STRE (Wks)) and 528 STRE (Power).

Electrical Power
Electrical Power and associated utilities are the remit of 528 STRE (Power) and the Group's Territorial Army sub-unit, 504 STRE (Power Infra) (V). 528 STRE (Power) also leads on coordinating development of deployable hospital infrastructure.

In order to do this, 63 Wks Gp RE has a very high proportion of officers, warrant officers and senior non-commissioned officers, who are either professionally qualified as Chartered Engineers or have been technically qualified by a particularly long and demanding course at the Royal School of Military Engineering which includes attachment to civilian engineering companies.

Technical support is provided by the Group's own military surveyors and draughtsmen and by ready access to military materials technicians from elsewhere in 170 (Infrastructure Support) Engineer Group, which also provides logistic and administrative support.

The expertise of 63 Works Group is in constant demand. It has been deployed routinely to Afghanistan and Iraq for operational tours. There are also short deployments of task-specific elements to both those Theatres, with other short deployments around the globe in support of military infrastructure, the work of other Government departments and to keep current those skills needed by our Regular and Territorial sub-units for the full range of missions to which an army might be committed.
