Headquarters Infantry

Operational control of Infantry battalions is exercised by the Brigades and Divisions of which they form a part. Headquarters Infantry exists to give direction and professional advice on Close Combat and Infantry matters in order to support the delivery of current and future Defence capability.

Overview

The Headquarters is located in the market town of Warminster, Wiltshire, on the site of the Land Warfare Centre. It is responsible for the recruiting, manning and training policy of the Infantry. In addition it determines the organisation of the Infantry and contributes to the development of equipment and capability.


Mission

"To give direction and professional advice on Close Combat and Infantry matters in order to enable the Chief of the General Staff to deliver the Army's contribution to current and future Defence capability."


Functions

The Headquarters provides direction and professional advice to support the Infantry's operational capability in the following functional areas:

  • Infantry Manning and Recruiting
  • The Divisions and Regiments of Infantry
  • The Army Reserve Infantry
  • Infantry Operations & Deployment and Plans Infantry Establishments
  • Infantry Training (Training Policy, Training Development Analysis, Personal Development, Courses and Publications)
  • Infantry Force Development
  • Infantry Equipment and Ammunition Management
  • Infantry Communication and Information Systems

Associated organisations

Headquarters Infantry also has responsibility for the following organisations:

  • Infantry Trials and Development Unit (ITDU), based in Warminster
  • Headquarters The Small Arms School Corps (SASC), including the Small Arms Collection, both of which are also based in Warminster
  • The Army Rifle Association (ARA), based in Bisley
