BONECRUSHER JOINS UP

The British Army’s garage is crammed with new high-tech vehicles. Even ones fresh from the Transformers film set.

Named ‘Bonecrusher’ in the blockbuster film, the heavily armoured Buffalo is now in service, protecting soldiers on operations in Afghanistan.

"SO TOUGH, EVEN IT'S CAMERAS ARE BULLET PROOF"

The Buffalo Mine-Protected Clearance Vehicle has giant wheels and a tough frame, making it perfect for protecting EOD teams as they deal with roadside bombs.

Cameras fitted to a robotic arm let soldiers find explosive devices from the safety of a blast-proof vehicle. It’s so tough, even its cameras are bomb-proof. The claw on the end of the arm scoops up bombs and dismantles them.

Joining the Buffalo are two tough transporters. The rugged 14-tonne Bulldog, heavier than three full-grown elephants, carries eight soldiers and a two-man crew.

The Ridgeback troop transporter is loaded up with state-of-the-art mine-clearing equipment and carries up to 12 soldiers. Despite this, it’s still agile enough to operate in towns. Amazingly, it can hit speeds of 55mph - even with flat tyres.
